How to Deal with Active Campaign's Latest Pricing Increase

Active Campaign's latest pricing change is the third increase in 2 years.

The big deal this time is that they are forcing legacy users to upgrade to new pricing for the first time since these price increases started.

I'm seeing a lot of freaking out on social media and knee-jerk 'what platform should I move to' posts.

If you're an Active Campaign user and you're worried about pricing, let me encourage you to pause and take several deep breaths.

OK. Got your CEO hat back on? Good.

Here are some things you need to know before you decide to jump ship.

Active Campaign's Latest Pricing Restructure

This most recent pricing change is a huge restructuring of their pricing plans to give more flexibility based on your number of contacts and the features you need.

The Starter plan replaces the Lite plan and has different features including more automation options but with limits on how many steps you can have in an automation. If you're just getting started, this plan is $19/month for 1000 contacts.

Considering the number of new AND established business owners I meet who still don't even have a basic automated welcome sequence, this plan will be plenty for most people getting started.

Active Campaign Sales and Marketing Bundles  Have Been Replaced with Add-Ons

Instead of choosing between large bundles of features in the Sales or Marketing category, pricing is now based on number of contacts and features like CRM, SMS, and transactional emails can be purchased as individual add-ons

Active Campaign Now Has Smaller Contact Pricing Tiers

Lastly, they've added more tiers for pricing based on the number of _active_ contacts. So instead of jumping from 10,000 to 25,000, there are steps for 7,500, 15,000, 20,000, etc.

Visit the Active Campaign website for complete updated pricing.

Should You Leave Active Campaign?

The first thing to do is stay calm and stay away from social media posts from people who are freaking out and making knee-jerk decisions based on emotions instead of data.

Here are steps you can take to decide if a move is right for you.

Remove Disengaged Contacts from Your Email List

If you've never audited and cleaned your list to remove unengaged people, now is a great time to do so. You'll want to base engagement on clicks since open reporting is unreliable.

If you haven't been giving people links to click in your emails, change that today. Active Campaign only charges for contacts who are subscribed to at least one list so follow best practices to fill your list with engaged and interested potential buyers.

Evaluate what features you actually need and use.

Once you know what features you really need, you may be able to adjust your plan to lower your pricing.

Make the Most of Your Active Campaign Features

When I started auditing Active Campaign accounts in 2022, most people we only using 10-15% of the capabilities of the platform. By using the software as it was intended, you should easily be able to 10x your investment.

Of course, you may decide that you don't need such a powerful automation platform and in that case, migrating to something else might be the right move.

Here are two articles to help you decide:
