The Buck Stops With You

If you follow me on Twitter, you've probably seen this quote:

  1. Try to do good
  2. F**k it up.
  3. Apologize.
  4. Try not to make the same mistake again.

Today's rant is brought to you by multiple encounters with trying to hire contractors who just didn't seem willing or able to step up to the job we were paying them to do. I don't expect people to be flawless – I make mistakes all the time. But I wish business owners would take more responsibility for what goes on in their business. After all, the buck stops with you.

Do you agree or am I being unreasonable? Let me know in the comments.

Love this one! My first business card had my title as my title, then under that, it said “the buck stops here.” I should go back to that. It was good.

  • JL Carpenter Design says:

I agree. You are not being unreasonable. It is fair to hold others to the same standards you set for yourself. If you can’t do that, those others are not part of your same values and need to go elsewhere.

Thanks for the sanity check. It starts to feel a little ‘Emperor’s new clothes’ when it’s so challenging to find people who will step up!
